Sustainably fair to middling

Right so the buzz word right now is sustainability, and here I am chiming in with my fair to middling take on living sustainably. I know what you’re thinking you already know all about plastic, climate change etc. but is that really what it’s all about? When I think of living sustainably I do obviously think about ways I can limit my carbon footprint and be kinder to the planet but I also think about sustaining myself in relation to money and wellbeing.

If you’ve read any of my other blog posts you’ll know that for me being fair to middling is about being in the middle, being average and everything in moderation. This is also my attitude to sustainability. We could all say that we are never going to buy anything that comes in plastic packaging again, we will never ever waste a single morsel of food, we will never waste any water etc. etc. but let’s face it that is not realistic! That way of life would be incredibly stressful, ridiculously expensive and probably a little bit miserable.

If we all just made some small changes it would make a huge difference on the whole. I bought some shopping bags around 2 years ago to do my food shopping and I use them every week, this is not adding to the plastic issue, it didn’t cost me much money and there is nothing stressful about having your own shopping bags so that ticks, good for planet, good for my finances and no negative impact on my wellbeing.

Another example is face scrubs, I hate rubbing little tiny amounts of plastic on my face and it is also bad for the planet, so I came up with a homemade face scrub that takes 2 minutes to make, uses all natural ingredients, is cheaper than any face scrub I’ve ever seen and leaves me feeling good about my skin so again tick tick tick.

I think it is really important not to get lost in the whole sustainable living thing and forget about the fact you are trying to live your life. I do try really hard to buy clothes that are made using sustainable fabrics but sometimes what I want/need isn’t available in a sustainable fabric or it is but I can’t afford it. I don’t beat myself up about this, I tried to do the right thing but unfortunately I couldn’t follow through with it that time. There are great options on the high street now though, including the likes of H&M with their conscious range so give it a try, try to think about what you’re buying but don’t beat yourself up if you can’t make it work.

There are lots and lots of things that we can do to live a more sustainable life for both the planet and ourselves as individuals. My future posts will share tips and ideas about how we can live more sustainably as well as discussing important topics about sustainability. Individually we can do our best but the crazy thing is together we really can change the world.
